What are the rules for TOEFL classes?

What types of TOEFL Classes does PALS Offer?

  1. TOEFL Boot Camp (20 hours per week for full-time students / at least 2 hours per week for part-time students)
  2. TOEFL Advanced (4 hours per week)

   What is TOEFL Boot Camp?

TOEFL Boot Camp is an intermediate level TOEFL preparation course that requires a minimum score to be admitted. To enter the class, students must present a recent test score that meets TOEFL Boot Camp admissions standards. All test scores may not be more than 7 weeks old when presented.

 

What Does TOEFL Boot Camp Include?

  1. 10 hour test review classes
  2. 8 hours of section improvement (Reading and Writing / Listening and Speaking) classes
  3. Homework lab (2 hours)

Full-time students taking TOEFL Boot Camp must take all 3 components of TOEFL Boot Camp. It is a total of 20 hours.

Part time students may elect to take either the test review classes, section improvement classes or homework lab.

 

How Can I Enter TOEFL Boot Camp?

To enter TOEFL Boot Camp, all students must reach the following proficiency:

ITP 480 / iBT 57 / IELTS 5.5

Students that are new or returning will follow different steps to enter TOEFL Boot Camp.

  • New Students
  1. Present a TOEFL or IELTS test score that is no more than 7 weeks old that meets the TOEFL Boot Camp admissions standard.
  2. Score 480 or above during the TOEFL ITP test on placement test day.
  • Returning Students
  1. Present a TOEFL or IELTS test score no more than 7 weeks old that meets the TOEFL Boot Camp admissions standard.
  2. Take the TOEFL Qualifying Exam on the 6th week of each session and score 480 or above on the TOEFL ITP test. (A $30.00 testing fee is required when signing up for the test)

What Are The Academic Standards That TOEFL Boot Camp Have?

  • All students in TOEFL Boot Camp will be given a target score that they must reach on the exit ITP test at the end of the session.

The following chart indicates the individual target score that each student is required to reach when they enter TOEFL Boot Camp.

Initial Placement Score (ITP) Expected Growth Rate
480-520 8%
521-540 7%

Current students in TOEFL Boot Camp unable to attain the growth rate that is given to them at the beginning of the semester will NOT be eligible to continue taking TOEFL Boot Camp in the second half of the semester.

They will instead be required to take a Reading and Writing class with 2 electives.

After one half semester taking Reading and Writing classes, students may apply for admission into TOEFL Boot Camp again.

 

What Is The TOEFL Boot Camp Qualifying Exam?

On Friday of the 6th and 13th week during Writing Lab time, students in Reading and Writing classes that wish to take TOEFL Boot Camp must take a qualifying exam and reach ITP 480.

Students that do not take the exam or fail to reach the admission score needed will NOT be allowed into TOEFL Boot Camp.

Students may also take a late test during regular PALS placement test dates by arrangement.


TOEFL Advanced (4 hours per week)

TOEFL Advanced is a higher level TOEFL class for students that are seeking to reach a TOEFL score above 76 points.

 

Admissions

To qualify for TOEFL Advanced, students must reach the following proficiency:

ITP 540 / iBT 76 / IELTS 6


TOEFL Advanced Academic Standards

  • All students in TOEFL Advanced will be given an individual growth rate that they must attain on the exit ITP test at the end of the 1st or 2nd half of the semester.
  • TOEFL Elective Growth Rate Goals

The following chart indicates the individual target growth rate that each student is required to reach when they enter TOEFL Advanced under different score ranges.

  • Students in TOEFL Advanced that are unable to attain the growth rate that is given at the beginning of the session will be asked to leave TOEFL Advanced for one half semester before entering again.
