Housing arrangements should be made before you arrive in the US. To reserve an on-campus dormitory room, please contact the PALS office by phone or email well in advance.
Campus Dormitory and Dining Services
Dormitory rooms are available to PALS students; however, the allocation of dormitory rooms is made on a first-come first-served basis. Students are advised to request a room as early as possible. All PALS dormitory residents are required to purchase a meal plan from the University Dining Services.
About the Dormitory Building
PALS students are housed in the Quads in Livingston Campus. Each Quad has ten houses with a courtyard in the center. Every house has 4 or more floors. It is also located near the Library/Computer Lab, new Livingston Dining Commons, Bus Stop, Gym and the Livingston Student Center, all within walking distance. It has an underground main lounge that is connected to every house via tunnels and its own community kitchen and study lounge. It is also in walking distance of the Rutgers Cinema, and other vendors under the Livingston Apartments. It is also home to the Living-Learning Communities Discovery Houses & Social Justice House.
About the Dormitory Room
Each room has a small refrigerator, microwave and two beds with mattresses; two closets and a dresser for storage; a desk with chair; a mirror; a ceiling light; and data ports. Residents may store small snacks in their rooms. Safety regulations prohibit the use of other cooking appliances in the rooms. You will need to have your own bed sheets (size twin extra-long), blankets, a pillow, towels, a reading lamp, clothes hangers, etc. The University no longer provides land-line telephone service to dorm rooms; you may use your own mobile phone if you prefer. Rooms are heated; residents may bring or buy fans (fans are not expensive to purchase in the USA) to use in the room. Air conditioners are not permitted.
About the Meal Plan
Residents are required to purchase a meal plan from University Dining Services that permits them to eat a specific number of meals over the course of the dining service contract. A typical meal plan is for 14 weeks and provides the student with 110 meals in any Rutgers University Dining Hall (there are several of them on the university).
