Tuition & Expenses

Tuition & Expenses

In order to plan the required expenses for studying at PALS, information regarding fees and other expenses is provided here. Please note that to comply with F-1 visa status, you must enroll for at least two consecutive seven week sessions which form one complete semester.

Fee Structure for Academic Year 2008-2009  
FOR NEW STUDENTS ONLY: Placement Testing Fee (one time) $100

General Student Fee

Computer and Language Lab Fees $100
Textbook Fee [Includes Journal, Error Log, Word Bank, and Audio Diary Tape] $135
ALL STUDENTS MUST PAY: Tuition for each 7-week Session, full-time study* $1400
   
*Tuition for part-time study is based on the number of class hours per week:  

13-15 hours - $1280 (+ $100 textbook fee)
11 hours - $1100 (+ $80 textbook fee)
10 hours - $1000 (+ $80 textbook fee)
9 hours - $ 900 (+ $80 textbook fee)
8 hours - $ 800 (+ $80 textbook fee)

6 hours - $600 (+ $45 textbook fee)
5 hours - $500 (+ $45 textbook fee)
4 hours - $400 (+ $45 textbook fee)

 
FOR EACH SESSION F1 Students only pay:
Rutgers Basic and Major Medical Health Insurance Fee*** $270.00
*** Please note : Rutgers University requires health insurance coverage for all F2 dependents. Please inquire at the PALS office for dependent insurance information. Purchase of health insurance is optional for PALS students, who do not have F1/F2 visas.  
FOR EACH SEMESTER*, ALL F1 STUDENTS ALSO PAY:  
*PLEASE NOTE: EACH PALS SESSION CONSISTS OF SEVEN WEEKS OF INTENSIVE ENGLISH CLASSES. RUTGERS UNIVERSITY'S FALL SEMESTER CONSISTS OF PALS SESSIONS I AND II; RUTGERS SPRING/SUMMER SEMESTER CONSISTS OF PALS SESSIONS III,IV, & V.  
Rutgers-SEVIS Fee** $100
** The Rutgers SEVIS fee is in addition to the SEVIS fee paid to the US government.  
AND: F-1/F-2 students: Estimated expenses for F-1 Visa students-For PALS to issue an I-20, the financial documents you send us must show these amounts (or more) in funds available to you:
Estimate for Tuition and Fees (Two Sessions) $4600
Estimates for Textbooks and Supplies $400
Estimate for Living Expenses (estimate for two sessions) $6000
I-20 Financial documents must show a minimum total of: $11,000

Payment Procedures:
Payments are accepted by check, money order and traveler’s checks (in US dollars and written in English). Include the name of the student on the “Memo,” “For,” or “Remitter” section. Credit card authorization form via mail or fax is also acceptable. To obtain a Credit Card Authorization Form please click here. You will find the fax number on the form itself.

Acceptable forms of payment by MAIL are:
  • Bank or Company check (drawn on a US or International bank)
  • Personal Check (from a US bank)
  • International Money Order
  • US Money Order

Acceptable forms of payment IN PERSON are:

  • Cash (Do not send by mail!!)
  • Credit Card (Visa, Master Card, or Discover only. Rutgers University does not accept American Express))
  • Bank or Company Check (Drawn on a US or international bank)
  • Personal Check (From a US bank)
  • Traveler’s Check (Needs to be signed in person, do not send by mail!)
  • International Money Order
  • US Money Order
Payments are also accepted by bank wire transmittal/telegraph. Please contact our office for additional information about bank wire payments. (732-445-7423 by phone or eslpals@rci.rutgers.edu by e-mail).
Refund and Transfer Policy
( I-20 applicants must return I-20 to PALS before being issued a refund)
Refunds (Refund checks are available four to six weeks after the request date):
  • Before Classes Begin: Excluding the $200 non-refundable deposit and excluding the $100 SEVIS fee: 100% of tuition, general student fee, computer lab fee, health insurance fee (if applicable), and placement testing fee (if placement test was not taken).
  • First Week of Classes: Excluding the $200 non-refundable deposit, and excluding the $100 SEVIS fee: 80% of tuition, general student fee, computer fee, and health insurance fee (if applicable).
  • Second week of classes: Excluding the $200 non-refundable deposit and excluding the $100 SEVIS fee: 60% of tuition, general student fee, computer fee, health insurance fee (if applicable).
  • No refunds after the end of the second week of classes.

Transfers
(To other sessions within one calendar year of original payment date)

  • If no classes are taken or before classes begin: Excluding the $200 non-refundable deposit and excluding the $100 SEVIS fee: 100% of tuition, general student fee, computer fee, health insurance fee (if applicable), placement testing fee (if test was not taken).
  • First Week of Classes: Excluding the $200 non-refundable tuition deposit and excluding the $100 SEVIS fee: 80% of tuition, general student fee, computer fee, health insurance fee (if applicable).
  • Second Week of Classes: Excluding the $200 non-refundable deposit and excluding the $100 SEVIS fee: 60% of tuition, general student fee, computer fee, health insurance fee (if applicable).
